My Two-Month Experience using Amazon's AMP

The Amp app has been deprecated. My short, but valuable journey with AMP as "DJ Kazerific" has come to an end on 31-OCT-2023 and this post is my final farewell. I diligently hosted a total of nine shows once a week for my AMP shows, "Kazerific," which focused on my personal music inspirations and the "All Rounders at SM Entertainment" show, which focused on highlighting the music of SM artists. I had an incredible journey on this app, which forced me into a commitment whether or not I had listeners or up to six listeners, which is my personal high amount on a show (not including myself because that is my husband's favorite question). I wanted to write about my experience even though the shows looked easy to create every week, but it was not easy. https://www.onamp.com/ no longer exists and is seemingly wiped off the internet. AMP is owned by Amazon.com, Inc. and was launched in March 2022 to allow creators to host their own talk or music show. Listen...

Experience:

2000 - DJ at SUNY Oneonta for one semester
2023 - Started live music shows, "Kazerific" and "All Rounders at SM Entertainment" at On Amp as @djkazerific

I majored in music industry in college with a minor in music theory so it is no wonder why I love music. I enjoy playing the piano and violin, but I do not limit myself to these instruments. Doing the Kazerific show allows me to live one of my dreams to be a pop music DJ.

It wasn't always easy. You may wonder why I only DJed for only one semester in college. It was because the student manager at the DJ station did not like pop music and pop music is not popular in the area so I was discouraged from continuing this path of life. I really wished I did not quit so early on, but I also wanted to stay true to myself and my passion.

I remember one of the students looked though my CD collection and found that he only respected my musical taste because I had a Mariah Carey CD and of course, we cannot deny Mariah Carey's talent. It was a wake up call and a lonely path for me as listening to pop music was considered a "sell out," meaning losing my soul to what true music meant.

I have worked in the music studio on a music production project in college, but had arguments over what pop music is and what true music is to a person. I know that when I listen to pop music, it gives me emotions and I am fulfilled. I won't say every pop song is great, but there are definitely some favorites that I would love to recommend to you.

I grew up listening to Cantopop in the '80s and '90s. This is very unusual for an Asian American kid. My parent's roots are in Hong Kong and I loved Hong Kong entertainment.

Eventually, I was fascinated by the American pop music of the '90s and started listening to it. This includes the "bubblegum" pop music. I also worked in a music chain store called "Coconuts" for a summer job in college and expanded my musical knowledge of other artists while working there.

Lastly, I married a Korean man and started listening to K-pop music since my husband played Korean music shows on the TV. In 2009, Girls Generation's Gee jumpstarted my long-standing love for K-pop music. Despite not understanding the lyrics, k-pop music had the power to draw me in and mostly the songs have some English or English-inspired words in them.

Why did I pick the name Kazerific? Honestly, I wanted the name DJ Kaz, but I see on the internet, this name is already taken (despite me being a DJ in the year 2000?) I did not want to cause confusion so I used the made-up adjective word, Kazerific, to mean something like terrific. Kaz also seemed to be a shortened version of my real name Karen and my super hero name, Powerz. I just took the first two letters of my first name and the last letter of my super hero name and combined it. I also have planned an album (that I never fully created) to be my second music album called Kazerific. I was a songwriter during college so I figured I could be a singer-songwriter for fun.

Even though my Kazerific music show has a focus, I do not want to limit myself as music is a journey. I know to be successful, we should have a niche, but it does not hurt to venture out to explore what we could have missed. Music is definitely a journey of memories and new experiences. Please join me in this adventure of finding meaningful music.
